Endorsements for Institutions of Education

An education endorsement s not accreditation, but rather quality assurance and accountability. Those who obtain endorsement must follow institutional standards that meet generally accepted practices of higher education offerings. The endorsement structure is broken down into three tiers:

Tier 1 -  Christian Education Center
Christian based primary and secondary schools, schools of ministry, and institutions within states that do not offer a religious exemption, or are designed strictly for discipleship and ministry trinity programs (non-degree).
How does this benefit you:
By working within the parameters set by your state, we will help you develop a program that offers maximum educational opportunities, while remaining inside legal standards of your state.

Tier 2 -  Institution with Religious Exemption
Post secondary religious oriented institutions within states that offer a religious exemption.
How does this benefit you:
By providing quality assurance for degrees conferred and, if desired, consulting toward pursuit of accreditation with a recognized accreditation body.

Tier 3 - Institutions of Higher Education
College or university who has received accreditation from an accrediting body recognized vy the U.S. Department of Education.
How does this benefit you:
While we do not provide accreditation, for institutions with U.S. Accreditation from a recognized accrediting body, we provide quality assurance and biblical accountability that hold institutions to a higher standard than simply being compliant with legislation.

What is religious exemption?
State laws vary regarding the conferring of degrees by religious organizations and must be upheld by all SALT Endorsement Candidates. Some states exempt only religious institutions owned or operated by a church. Other states exempt nonprofit, tax-exempt, religious institutions. States vary in their limitations on the courses or programs offered by exempt institutions. Some states provide exemptions for schools that prepare students for a vocation in the church or religious organization. Additionally, States vary on:
  1. Whether the institutions can confer degrees.
  2. The types of degrees they can confer.
  3. The degree titles they can use.
The States also vary based on whether the institutions are required to file regularly with the state. Several states require that exempt institutions file annually to maintain their exempt status. Currently, 29 states exempt religious schools or bible colleges from their higher education licensing, certification, or accreditation process. The remaining 21 are as follows: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Kansas, Kentucky, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming. If your institution is registered within one of the states mentioned above, you are not legally authorized to confer degrees without proper accreditation.
